Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her grandmother, mom and godparents. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started to become interested in acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor fit there. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
